We’re putting the cool back in cabbie (let’s pretend, shall we?) and sharing our four top taxi movie scenes.
And what’s cooler than starting your very own trend? That’s why we’re going with four flicks instead of the standard three or 10. And seeing that taxi is a four-letter word, we thought we’d follow suit.
Putting the cool back in taxi isn’t as far fetched as you think. The likes of Bruce Willis, Matt Damon, Robert De Niro and Arnold Schwarzenegger have already done most of the work for us. Now all we have to do is sit back and watch – quite literally – then reap the benefits.
You see, taxi cabs have enjoyed quite a bit of airtime on the big and small screens, leaving quite the reputation in their midst – thanks Rob! And now we’re cool by association, which adds rather nicely to our trendsetting four-item list (you’ll be seeing more of those in time).
Here are our top picks taxi-movie-scene-wise, starting with the golden oldies…
1. Taxi Driver
It’s quite ironic that some years before this release, struggling actor Robert De Niro would not have enjoyed the luxury of being taxi-farer. But being a taxi driver? – killed it! As one would expect from an Academy Award winner – he had won Best Supporting Actor two years prior.
In the film, De Niro assumes the character of a vengeful cabbie – one of his most harrowing roles to date. Not for the feint-hearted. Check him (and Martin Scorsese) out in one of our favourite scenes:
2. Total Recall
We love this taxi movie scene featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a secret agent on the run and a robot taxi driver named Johnny Cab. What ensues is a humerous, sarcastic “Where to?” conversation that goes nowhere…until Arnold takes the wheel:

3. The Fifth Element
Just moments after Milla Jovovich crash lands in his taxi, a young Bruce Willis finds himself thrust into a car chase. Fast paced and colourfully over the top, the taxi movie scene in this film is visually brilliant. With near collisions and an airborne taxi zipping past skyscrapers leaving 8-bit sound effects in its wake – sort of what we imagine flying through a Ping-Pong machine would be like in real life.
4. The Bourne Supremacy
Now if you doubted the cool in cabbie, Matt Damon’s “cameo” in the taxi driver’s seat will make you a believer. The heartthrob nabs a taxi cab in a bid to outrun some coppers. What ensues is a mad dash through the streets of Moscow. There’s handbrake turns, screeching tires, 360 spins…we’ve never seen a taxi cab in this much action.
